The story of Meaders Pottery begins in 1893, when John Milton Meaders established a small pottery shop in Mossy Creek, White County, Georgia. Rooted in the utilitarian needs of rural Appalachian life, the Meaders family crafted churns, jugs, crocks, and other everyday wares from local clay. Their work followed the traditions of Southern alkaline-glazed stoneware, blending practicality with distinctive rustic beauty. Over time, the family became one of the most respected names in Georgia folk pottery, passing down both techniques and artistry through generations.

Among the most celebrated members of the family was Lanier Meaders (1917–1998), who achieved national recognition for his expressive face jugs and masterful craftsmanship. His work helped elevate Southern folk pottery from utilitarian craft to collectible folk art, earning exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution and widespread acclaim among collectors.
